Housebreak Your Yorkshire Terrier - Training Your Yorkie Quickly
Housebreaking a Yorkshire terrier may take longer than with other small breed dogs. No one knows for sure why this is true, but it does seem to be a fact. Here are some ways to train your Yorkie so that she doesn’t use the house for a bathroom.
- Dogs will not urinate or defecate where they sleep. This means that your Yorkshire terrier can be trained to stay in a kennel or other enclosure and let out every few hours to go to the bathroom outside.
- You must be consistent with any dog or they will quickly forget what you want them to do. Keep a strict time schedule while you are going through the housebreaking process.
- Reward your Yorkie when she waits for you to let her out to urinate or defecate. Praise her and give her a treat when she does what she is supposed to.
- Never yell at your dog or hit them. This will not cure the problem and will make your dog turn into a poor pet. You can easily change the tone of your voice without yelling or screaming.
- Be careful about training your dog with newspapers. The sound of the papers rustling can be very frightening, especially to a young dog. Try using soft pads that are made specifically for housebreaking.
Training your dog is much easier if you have help from someone who has gone through the process many times before. Experience shows that housebreaking can be done very quickly by using the correct method.
