The Reasons For Loss of Appetite in Dogs

Sometimes feeding time becomes difficult whenever your pet won’t cooperate. You might be wondering what he or she is up to this time. When the loss of appetite in dogs becomes too frequent then that is not a good sign. For one thing, food gives it nourishment so if it does not eat it will become unhealthy. Certainly you do not want an unhealthy and sickly pet, right? So you need to ask yourself as to what went wrong with his or her eating habits. The factors that you need to consider are the following: eating schedule, the type of dog food, the place, and the bowls and feeders.

The loss of appetite in dogs should be taken seriously by any dog owner because your pet is your responsibility and something must be wrong inside its body. Take a look at its eating schedule. Do you have it fix at a specified time during the day? If your answer is yes then that is good because you know how the proper way of feeding. However if you do not fix a schedule you have a problem. Normally two equally spaced feedings a day is enough. If you do not keep a schedule then you might be feeding it more than what is required.

Not to mention the tons of delicious dog treats that you give. Too much handling of treats is one of the reasons for the existence of loss of appetite in dogs. It is possible that they are already full before you give them meals because of the loads of treats. Actually, when you give too many treats it becomes equivalent to one full meal so be mindful when you hand them out. The next consideration is the type of dog food. Are you frequently changing what you feed? If your answer is yes, then your pet might not like the switching of taste or it has already found the right taste that is why it ignores something that falls short.

I have read that the frequent switching of dog food is one of the effects for the loss of appetites in dogs. Just like humans who know how to choose which food makes them satisfied. Dogs have taste buds too so they can tell if the food taste good or not. The amount of food matters a lot, too. Try to give the same proportion at all times and fix the amount and schedule of treats. That way you will know how much food get into your pet’s stomach. The next factor is the place where your pet eats. Is it nice, clean and does not contain any distraction? Be sure that nothing will catch your pooch’s attention that will make it ignore its food.

If you want you can make the area a bit secluded by using a wide dog fence or a gate. That way your pet will not wander off to some place away from its food. The last consideration for the loss of appetite in dogs are the bowls and feeders. Make sure that they are appropriate for your dog’s mouth size. Too small will create much mess and something too large can will make it difficult for your pet to eat. Find out if some of the previously mentioned factors are present and make sure you put some action to solve your pet’s loss of appetite.
